Negative thoughts about relationships, careers, health and personal problems are considered harmful to our mental health. Thinking about bad situations beforehand is also considered unnecessary, since the person’s way of thinking influences their attitude towards life. These lines of thought can lead to a pessimistic mindset that can seriously affect a person’s otherwise healthy lifestyle.
By thinking and feeling consistently, a person can already suffer from depression. A person dealing with this disease may feel irritated for no apparent reason, along with a lack of energy and focus. Depression is not a one-off event. If a person has had depression at some point in their life, the likelihood of recurrence is high. Some people show depression in different ways. Symptoms of this can be the following: constant feelings of sadness, tension and irritability; Change in appetite with significant weight gain or weight loss; Unrest; Change in sleep patterns; Decrease in pleasure in usual hobbies and interests; Lack of decision-making skills; Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and hopelessness; and thoughts of suicide and death.
People who suffer from this type of feeling may not seek help from other people, including their own family members. Depression is believed to be an illness for a person’s mental health, and treating it would be very critical, as it could affect not just the individual but everyone and everything in their life. Other people dealing with depression sometimes try to harm themselves, convinced that these negative feelings will never end. For this reason, everyone should know the symptoms of depression and know that it is a treatable disease.
Depression results from a number of factors depending on the person and the environment. Family history plays an important role in this psychological problem. Another factor that triggers this can be trauma and stressful situations. Death, financial problems, breakups, and changes in your life (be it a new job, graduation, or marriage) can all make you feel depressed. Some people also have the characteristic of pessimism, where they usually have a negative outlook on life or have low self-esteem. Physical illnesses also cause depression. Serious illnesses such as cancer, HIV or heart disease can trigger depressive thoughts because these health conditions make the person weak and stressed. If you feel depressed, these conditions can make the situation worse than it already is. Other mental disorders, including anxiety, eating disorders, schizophrenia, and especially drug abuse, can easily make a person feel depressed.
Depression can really make the person feel bad inside and out. But the first step, which is to get adequate treatment, can deliberately cure depression. There are several medications that are specifically designed to treat depression (also known as antidepressants). Another way to get rid of feelings of depression is psychotherapy. Expressing feelings and sharing with a therapist can alleviate depression. The types of psychotherapy include cognitive behavior therapy, which can be used to identify thought and behavior patterns related to depression. Interpersonal therapy, on the other hand, deals with the connection between depression and difficult relationships. A longer therapy process would be psychodynamic therapy, which combines depression with certain events and conflicts that a person has experienced particularly in childhood. Group therapy focuses more on the interaction with other depressed people, shares rough experiences with the therapist and also offers advice.
